JAN L. JACOBOWITZ, ESQ.
Jan is a legal ethics consultant whose background as a litigator, in house counsel, and legal ethics scholar provide her with a unique perspective and skill set. About
She’s provided ethics opinions and litigation reports in many areas of legal ethics and risk management, including, but not limited to conflicts of interest, attorney fees, advertising, alternative business strategies, and UPL. Her qualifications include a special focus on technology and social media issues implicated in the practice of law.

Prior to devoting herself to legal education and legal ethics consulting, Jan practiced law for over twenty years. She began her career as a Legal Aid attorney in the District of Columbia; prosecuted Nazi war criminals at the Office of Special Investigations of the U.S. Department of Justice. She then practiced privately in general practice and commercial litigation firms in Washington and Miami.

Jan is involved in the ongoing, dynamic national conversations about legal ethics and the evolving nature of the practice of law primarily through her involvement in the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers (APRL) where she is on the board, the immediate Past President and the co-chair of APRL’s Future of Lawyering Committee.
Currently, in addition to managing Legal Ethics Advisor, Jan is a Lecturer in Law and the Director of the Professional Responsibility and Ethics Program (PREP) at the University of Miami’s School of Law.
Jan’s many publications include the co-authorship of the book, Legal Ethics and Social Media, A Practitioner’s Handbook, published by the ABA in June 2017 and the article, Happy Birthday Siri! Dialing in Legal Ethics for Artificial Intelligence, Smart Phones, and Real Time Lawyers published by Texas A&M Property Law Journal in 2018.
Jan has presented at hundreds of Ethics CLE Seminars and has been a featured speaker or panelist on topics such as Legal Ethics in Social Media and Advertising, Lawyer’s First Amendment Rights, Cultural Awareness in the Practice of Law, Cybersecurity, Mindful Ethics, Litigation Funding, eDiscovery, Conflicts of Interest, and Attorney Fees. Journalists throughout the country who cover the legal profession frequently quote her.
Jan’s national recognition is exemplified by her many awards that include her invitation to become an ABA Foundation Fellow in 2018 and the 2012 presentation of the ABA Smythe Gambrell Award honoring the work of the Professional Responsibility & Ethics Program at the University of Miami School of Law that she directs.
Jan has a J.D. from George Washington University and a B.S. in Speech from Northwestern University. She is an active member of the Florida Bar, the D.C. Bar and the California Bar. She is also a certified civil court mediator.
